Do the latest ATI cards work great on Ubuntu?

Hi all,

I want to buy a new PC and/or laptop and I was wondering whether the latest ATI cards (ATI Radeon HD 5000 and 4000 Series) worked great on Ubuntu? Especially using the free/open source drivers?

Thanks

After asking on #radeon, this is what I got:

<adamk> patcito: The HD5xxx cards support 2D modesetting only with radeon.  No 2D or 3D acceleration.
<adamk> That will hopefully change shortly, but there is no timetable.
<adamk> The HD4xxx cards support really good 2D acceleration.  3D works, but is not great.   It’s actively being worked on though.
<adamk> The r600 gallium driver is actively being worked on, but your guess is as good as mine as to how capable it will be when it’s done.
<adamk> The classic mesa driver is certainly capable of running ut2004 prett well, and even doom3 on some light settings.

So I think I’ll probably go with an HD4xxx as I don’t want to mess with proprietary drivers.
